School Clinic Procedures for Sick or Inured Students

When a student becomes ill during the school day, they are sent to the school clinic located in the main office. A trained health technician evaluates the student's symptoms to determine whether a call home is necessary. The technician aims to identify students who are genuinely unwell before contacting parents.

If a student reports feeling unwell, the technician will check their temperature. If a fever is present, the student will rest in the clinic while a parent or guardian is contacted for pickup. Due to the potential risk of contagion and the limited space in the clinic, students with a fever cannot remain at school for the rest of the day.

In compliance with Florida law, school staff cannot administer any medication (including over-the-counter options like Tylenol or topical ointments) without a signed release form from a parent or guardian. Additionally, families must provide all necessary medications. To authorize school staff to administer either prescription or non-prescription medication, a completed medication form must be submitted in advance.

For minor injuries such as scrapes, the area is cleaned and covered with a Band-Aid. For bumps or bruises, an ice pack is applied. If the injury appears more serious, parents will be notified.

Medications at School

If a student needs to take any medication during the school day—prescription or over-the-counter—the following guidelines must be followed:

  • A Medication Authorization Form must be fully completed and signed by a parent or guardian. [Print the form here]

  • Medications must be delivered in their original container with the expiration date and dosage instructions clearly printed on the label.

  • All medications must be stored in the school clinic and delivered directly by a parent or guardian.

  • Only the school health technician is authorized to administer medications.

  • A separate authorization form is required for each new illness or medication.

  • Students who take daily medications may use a physician-signed medication form, which will remain valid for the school year or the length of treatment. Parents are responsible for bringing in refills monthly.

  • The school does not supply any medications.

  • Frequent requests for over-the-counter medication may require a doctor’s note for continued administration.

Immunization Requirements

Florida law requires that all public school students be fully immunized. A valid Florida Certificate of Immunization must be on file in each student’s cumulative record. Proof of immunization is required at the time of registration.

Health Cards

A Health Card is required for every student and must be kept up to date. Health card information is updated through the FOCUS Parent Portal. If there are any changes to your child’s health information, address, phone number, or emergency contacts during the year, please update them promptly in FOCUS.
